Practice Rules

BE ON TIME - this means ready to go in your lane with your water bottle, goggles and all equipment at start time - not in the bathroom or parking lot. Being prompt is extremely important due to overlapping practice times and to ensure your safety with a proper warm up.

BE RESPECTFUL - for swimmers this means no backtalk, mouthing off, physically acting out, bullying, etc. It also means begins SUPPORTIVE of fellow teammates and treating them and their property with respect. Swimmers who are disrespectful of anyone in or on the pool deck will be dismissed from practice or the meet. Repeated infractions will result in dismissal from the team. For parents this means letting me know if you will miss a Tuesday night meet no later than the Friday prior in writing and replying to emails about additional meet opportunities promptly. It also means being a good example for your swimmer by supporting officials and going through proper channels if questions arise CALMLY AND RESPECTFULLY. Disrespectful behavior between swimmers, parents, officials and/or coaches will not be tolerated and may result in dismissal from the team.

LISTEN DURING INSTRUCTIONAL TIME - don’t chat with your friends when being given instructions. I promise there will be time for socializing!

BRING A WATER BOTTLE TO PRACTICE - water is not optional. WATER IS NOT OPTIONAL!!! With exception of C team every swimmer should come to their lane with water, goggles and any other equipment they may need. If you do not have water during a water break on warm days I will ask you to get a drink from the garden hose. IT IS IMPERATIVE that we stay hydrated.

WEAR APPROPRIATE SWIMWEAR - no shirts during competition (shirts for sun protection during practice are ok), no baggy shorts, no bikinis and no "tie neck" suits for girls. Two piece workout "tankini" style suits are OK for girls so long as they don’t require constant adjusting. Suits must be OK for diving, flipping and fast swimming.

DO NOT HANG OR HORSEPLAY ON THE ROPES / WALLS

PRACTICE ONLY MAKES PERFECT IF YOU PRACTICE PERFECTLY - so finish every length to the wall, do proper turns and always swim with good technique. Practicing bad technique makes for bad, hard to break habits

USE PROPER LANE ETIQUETTE - do not block the walls, do not grab or dunk others, do not splash teammates. Being the lane leader is NOT the goal. Swim in an appropriate order - bettering your times and strokes by practicing well is your goal! If a coach places your lane in an order there is a reason - follow the set order without complaint.

Please see the BHRC Swim Team calendar for important dates.  This year many events are also listed on the "events" section of this site. We will need stroke and turn officials so if you have any interest in becoming an official plan to attend the training on June 3 at 6pm at St Vincent's One Nineteen. There are other sessions hosted by other teams, so if you need a different date let us know.   I would also encourage anyone interested in officiating to walk the deck with a coach during B team to begin to be able to spot stroke infractions "live".
